If you’ve spent a day on the slopes you’ll know how important it is to wear snow pants. We all remember seeing that one guy at the start of the day wearing jeans, and we've all thought, “this isn’t going to end well.” Later on, you see him again...your prediction is confirmed. What were once ordinary blue jeans have transformed into sodden sacks of icy cold water, dragging at his legs, making it difficult to navigate the line to the ski lifts.
Don’t be that guy.
Wear the right winter clothing from day one and you’ll be coming back every year for more.
So how are snow pants any different from a pair of jeans? Ski & snowboard pants are constructed using synthetic materials that are engineered to stop water leaking through while retaining a high level of breathability so you don’t get too hot.
Even if you’re a seasoned veteran, you’re still going to end up with some snow on your pants. In powdery conditions, snow collects around the ankles, and if your pants aren’t up to the job, you’ll soon be feeling the effects. Snow pants come with two ratings that are worth looking at when choosing a pair: the waterproof rating and breathability rating.
Usually expressed as two numbers expressed in millimetres and grammes (e.g. 10,000mm/10,000g), these ratings tell you just how waterproof the garment is, and how well the material allows water vapour to escape (i.e. your sweat). The higher the rating, the better the garment.
If you spend a great deal of time in deep powder or wet rainy conditions, you might consider a higher waterproof rating up around the 20,000mm mark. Mostly warm and sunny at your local mountain? You can probably go for something closer to 5,000-10,000mm.
Breathability, on the other hand, is of greater concern to those who perspire a lot. Skilled riders who ski and board fast, cross-country riders and people who tend to perspire a lot when active should look for a high breathability rating up around 15,000g to 20,000g.
