What is Glamping and Why Should I Care?

What is Glamping and Why Should I Care?

As you may have guessed by now, we Outdorians love camping. It’s one of our favourite pastimes that can be enjoyed alone, with the family or a rowdy bunch of mates.

But, even though we love roughing it as much as the next diehard camper, sometimes it’s nice to be pampered when we go camping. This is where ‘glamping’ comes in.

‘Glamping’, short for ‘glamorous camping’, is exactly what the name suggests: camping with a whole heap of creature comforts. Glamping is designed for those of us who love the idea of camping and getting back to nature, but aren’t fond of sleeping on the cold hard ground and leaving a ‘real’ toilet behind.

Many hardcore campers scoff at the idea of glamping. ‘It’s not real camping,’ they say. And yes, it’s true, it’s not ‘real’ camping – it’s camping with all the uncomfortable parts taken out and replaced with modern wizardry and great facilities.

Camping vs. Glamping

So now that you have a general understanding of what glamping is, how does it differ to the camping you did back in the day (or still do up until now)?

When you go glamping, everything is already prepared before you reach your campsite. This includes everything from your tent, bed, lights and power supply. No more fumbling around like a drongo in the dark setting up your shelter. Simply park the car and hop straight into your tent.

Speaking of tents, did we mention that glamping tents aren’t the same as normal camping tents? Instead when glamping you’ll typically be sleeping in either a yurt, teepee, safari tent or canvas bell tent. Compared to the four-person dome tent you’re used to, these types of tents are huge. They are so big that they can easily fit a double bed (at minimum) within their walls.

Just you, a pimped out tent and endless nature around you…

Why Should I Care?

Although the idea of ‘glamping’ has been around for centuries, modern glamping as we know it has only been around for a few years. Within those few years, it has taken the world by storm. So if you want to stay ahead of the curve and make your mates back home jealous, glamping should be on your bucket list.

Here’s why:

  • No setup, no pack up: That’s right, just rock up, make a mess (but not too much), then go home. No setting up in the dark or rain. Just you and your tent ready to go.

  • Breakfast is served: Most glamping providers will offer a free breakfast picnic hamper for staying with them. Not only is this one less meal to worry about organising, it’s usually chock full of delicious local produce ready to make into your ideal brekky feast.

  • Powered up: If your phone’s battery lasts as long as the Pavlova you made for family Christmas, you’ll need access to power to keep it charged up. When glamping, most providers offer power outlets for your phones and other devices, meaning no more rationing your phone’s battery.

  • So much room for activities: When it comes to space, a camping tent feels like the cupboard Harry Potter lived in compared to the spacious mansion that is a glamping tent. You’ll never want to go back into your four-person sweatbox after glamping for the first time.

  • Sleep like a baby: One of the defining aspects to glamping is what you sleep on. When camping, you’ll often find yourself on a roll-up sleeping mat or if you are really lucky, an air mattress. When glamping, on the other hand, you’ll be treated to a full-size spring mattress just like the one you have at home. Better yet, all linen, pillows and blankets are provided too.

  • Open access: Depending on where you stay, you’ll get full access to the location’s facilities. This may include BBQs, toilets, fire pits and a manned reception ready to help you during your stay.

  • At one with nature: Although you are living in the lap of luxury, that doesn’t mean you aren’t staying in a natural habitat. Many glamping locations offer unique experiences in the wilderness, some of which can’t be achieved through ‘traditional’ camping .

Types of Glamping

When it comes to glamping, we like to think there are three main styles of it: ‘normal’ glamping, city glamping and experience-based glamping.

‘Normal’ glamping

This is the most common type of glamping you’ll find. You’ll get all the standard bits and pieces, such as; a queen size bed, picnic basket breakfast, phone chargers and a communal bathroom.

City glamping

Not all glamping happens out in the middle of nowhere. Some clever people have begun offering glamping on the roofs of a few choice buildings in the major cities. This is the perfect way to end a big night out on the town, as long as you don’t mind trading real grass for astroturf.

Experience-based glamping

Ever wanted to camp in absolute luxury in the middle of an open range zoo? Well, if that sounds like your cup of tea, experience-based glamping is for you. There are a number of providers that have package deals for unique overnight adventures for those who want to do something out of the ordinary.

Wrapping Up

So there you have it, that’s glamping. Sounds pretty great right? We reckon it does and encourage everyone to give it a whirl one day. It’s no fuss camping with all the creature comforts of a hotel room. What’s not to love?

Sure, some die-hard campers will scoff at you as you enter your huge, clean tent and lay down on your comfy queen-size bed, but ask yourself ‘who really cares?’
